What it does

Symbotic builds end-to-end automation for distribution centers. Pallets arrive at inbound cells where robotic arms break them down into cases, which are scanned and stored in their original packaging in a dense automated storage and retrieval system. Autonomous mobile robots called SymBots carry cases of up to 60 lb (27.2 kg) inside the structure, and robotic arms build mixed outbound pallets [4]. Symbotic says its fleet of about 22,000 SymBots travelled more than 200 million miles in 2025 [9].

For safety buyers, the main effect of this design is that robots and people are kept apart: the robots work inside a secured structure rather than in aisles shared with pickers and forklifts [4]. The hazards move to the edges of the system, such as inbound and outbound cells, maintenance access and the loading dock.

Two acquisitions extend into areas where people and machines do share space. In 2024 Symbotic bought the assets of Veo Robotics for $8.7 million, including the FreeMove 3D vision system that slows or stops industrial robots when people approach; Symbotic said FreeMove had ISO 13849 PL d, Category 3 certification from TÜV Rheinland [8]. In February 2026 it announced the purchase of Fox Robotics, maker of the FoxBot autonomous forklift for loading and unloading trailers [5].

Who it is for

Symbotic's systems are capital projects for large retailers, grocers, wholesalers and food and beverage companies. Walmart is its largest customer by a wide margin; The Robot Report cites estimates that Walmart accounted for nearly 90% of revenue in early 2026 [5]. The FoxBot is aimed at any warehouse with dock traffic, including companies too small for a full Symbotic system [5].

How it is deployed

A Symbotic system is installed in a new or existing building and run by Symbotic software [4]. Customers can also buy capacity through Exol (formerly Greenbox), a network of automated warehouses offered as a service [12].

Fox says the FoxBot is a standard three-wheel electric counterbalance forklift fitted with safety-certified sensors and its own firmware, built to ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 for E-type trucks, with manual operation possible at any time [6]. It uses 3D lidar, cameras, programmable logic controllers, a safety relay and redundant braking, and sounds its horn before entering and leaving trailers [7]. Fox says one operator can supervise six or more FoxBots and that no IT or WMS integration is needed [14]. Fox does not cite ISO 3691-4, the standard for driverless industrial trucks, on the pages we reviewed.

Notable public customers and coverage

Symbotic is headquartered in Wilmington, Massachusetts, and names Richard B. Cohen as chairman and CEO along with its leadership team [2] [3]. Its story begins with Cohen's need to automate his grocery wholesale warehouses in the early 2000s [1].

Customer stories are mostly about capacity and service. Associated Food Stores in Utah says the system let it reduce leased storage space [11]; no safety figures are given. Coverage of the Fox deal shows a gap between claims: Fox's website said it had 100 or more FoxBots at 54 customer sites, while Cohen told analysts Fox had about 25 customers, mostly in pilots [5].

In November 2024, Symbotic delayed its annual report after finding errors in revenue recognition and material weaknesses in internal controls, and lowered fiscal 2024 figures by an estimated $30 million to $40 million [10].

Things to ask in an evaluation

  • How are people protected during maintenance and fault recovery inside the structure, and how is lockout handled?
  • Which FoxBot safety functions are rated, and to which standards, including ISO 3691-4?
  • How does the FoxBot detect people inside a trailer or on the dock plate?
  • Is FreeMove used in your system's robot cells, and with what certification?
  • What incident data exist from operating sites, beyond productivity metrics?

Our take

Strengths

  • The core system separates robots from people by design, which removes forklift and picker traffic from storage areas [4].
  • Owns a certified robot safeguarding technology through the Veo Robotics purchase (certification vendor-stated) [8].
  • FoxBot pages give concrete safety design details, including the B56.1 basis and redundant braking [6] [7].

Watch-outs

  • No published safety outcome data, security page, certification or data processing terms [11] [13].
  • Fox customer numbers differ between Fox's website and Symbotic's CEO, and many deployments are pilots [5].
  • Heavy reliance on one customer and a 2024 restatement with control weaknesses [5] [10].

Best fit: Large distribution operators planning a full automation project, and sites with heavy trailer traffic willing to pilot autonomous dock forklifts with their own safety validation.
