What it does

Sphera sells software, data and consulting for EHS&S (environment, health, safety and sustainability), process safety, product stewardship and supply chain risk [1]. On the safety side, its EHS&S suite covers incident management, audits, risk assessment, contractor safety, behavior-based safety, training, corrective actions and analytics [5]. Its operational risk line adds PHA-Pro for process hazard analysis and HAZOP studies [6], plus a Control of Work suite with permit to work, isolation management, barrier and deviation management, shift handover logs and emergency response [7]. Sphera markets an AI layer, Sphera AI, which it says helps fill forms and spot hazards [12].

Who it is for

Sphera targets large enterprises. It says it serves more than 8,500 customers and one million users in 100 countries [2]. Its Control of Work page quotes oil and gas operators [7], and its operational risk page shows logos such as BASF, BP, Dow and Shell [6]. The company traces its roots to 1978 and was formed in 2016 when IHS sold its operational excellence and risk management group to Genstar Capital [1].

How it is deployed

Products run on SpheraCloud, which Sphera describes as a SaaS and mobile platform [8]. Its UK G-Cloud 14 listing for health and safety management describes a hosted private cloud service with UK data hosting, a mobile app for selected use cases, APIs and two-factor authentication, at a list price of £31,000 a unit a year [9]. Sphera says Control of Work can create permits from ERP work orders [7].

Notable public customers and coverage

Blackstone funds completed the purchase of Sphera from Genstar Capital for about $1.4 billion in September 2021 [3]. In September 2025 Neuberger Berman Capital Solutions made a growth investment, with Blackstone keeping a majority stake; Sphera's headquarters are in Chicago [2]. Verdantix noted that this followed an April 2025 process in which Blackstone explored a sale at a $3 billion valuation [4]. In June 2026 Verdantix named Sphera one of seven Leaders among 11 vendors in its Process Safety Management Software Green Quadrant [10]. In a Sphera case study, Duke Energy says it cut chemical management effort from four people to under two full-time staff across about 120 generating sites [11].

Things to ask in an evaluation

  • Which safety modules run natively on SpheraCloud and which came from acquired products?
  • Can you see current ISO 27001 and SOC 2 reports, a DPA and a subprocessor list?
  • What does a "unit" mean in the published G-Cloud price?
  • How were the AI form-filling and hazard features tested, and is your data used to train them?
  • How does Control of Work connect to your maintenance and ERP systems?

Our take

Strengths: Covers EHS management, process hazard analysis and control of work from one vendor [5][6][7]. Verdantix named it a Leader in its 2026 process safety Green Quadrant [10]. Its G-Cloud listing publishes a list price, UK hosting and security details [9].

Watch-outs: There is no dedicated security page, DPA or subprocessor list on sphera.com; ISO 27001, SOC 2 and TISAX are vendor claims in its 2024 sustainability report [13]. AI and outcome claims, such as "50% fewer incidents and injuries", come without a published method or baseline [6][12]. Blackstone explored a sale in 2025 before taking a minority investor, so ask about roadmap stability [2][4].

Best fit: Large, multi-site organizations in process industries such as oil and gas, chemicals and power generation that want EHS, process safety and control of work from one enterprise vendor [7][10][11].
