What it does

Rhombus Systems sells cloud-managed security cameras, access control, sensors and alarm monitoring on one platform, the Rhombus Console. It was founded in 2016 in Sacramento, California, and names Garrett Larsson as co-founder and CEO [1]. In August 2024 it announced a $45 million Series C led by NightDragon, bringing total funding to over $90 million; at the time it reported more than 3,000 customers and over 100,000 devices [2]. No later round was found.

Its AI features include natural language search of video, person and vehicle detection, occupancy counting and audio and environmental alerts [3]. The safety-relevant piece is Rhombus Insights: users write a question in plain language for a camera, and Custom Events uses a large language model to log answers and send alerts. Rhombus's own examples include whether a forklift is operating near a restricted zone [4]. Customers either pay token-based usage for the Rhombus-provided model or connect their own account with another model provider [5]. Rhombus's E50 sensor measures temperature, humidity and particulates, detects vaping and audio events such as glass breaking, and accepts an optional leak probe [6]. Its manufacturing page describes alerts for temperature changes, smoke, vape and poor air quality [7]. A dedicated PPE, slip and fall or forklift proximity model is not listed among the AI features on its current license comparison [8], so buyers should treat such checks as Custom Events they configure themselves.

Who it is for

Rhombus is a general security platform used by schools, cities, retailers and businesses [2]. For safety teams it fits sites that want security cameras and basic operational checks, such as zone entry, air quality and incident review, on one system, rather than a specialist safety analytics product.

How it is deployed

Rhombus cameras record to on-camera storage and are managed in the cloud, so no NVR is needed [9]. For existing cameras, the Relay Core N100 on-site device connects up to 10 third-party cameras with RTSP streaming, using ONVIF where supported, and encrypts video once it reaches the device [10][11]. Relay Lite connects one legacy camera per Rhombus camera at no extra cost [10]. AI features on third-party cameras need a Professional or Enterprise license per camera [9]. These are alerting and documentation tools. They are not safety-rated protective devices under IEC 61496 or ISO 13849 and cannot stop a vehicle or machine.

Notable public customers and coverage

Rhombus describes Metalsa, an automotive chassis plant in Roanoke, Virginia, using over 120 cameras, including in robotic welding cells, and using footage of a forklift incident to change driver training and fit protective plates [12]. Middleby Outdoor, at a 344,000 square foot distribution hub, says investigation time fell from two days to about 10 minutes; this is a vendor-reported, security-focused result [13]. In March 2026 Honeywell announced a reseller and integration agreement to offer Rhombus video through its channel in North America [14]. Rhombus also previewed Recon, a software layer for third-party security robots, which it says it is not yet selling [15].

Things to ask in an evaluation

  • Which safety checks would run as built-in detections and which as Custom Events, and how are Custom Events validated for each camera?
  • What does Custom Events cost at your camera count, and where are images sent when you use your own model provider?
  • What do Relay Core and licenses cost for your existing cameras, given the current price list?
  • How do alerts reach your EHS or incident system (webhooks, API, Teams)?
  • What false alert rates have customers seen for zone and environmental alerts?

Our take

Strengths

  • Publishes hardware and license prices, for example a mini dome at $399 plus a $149 Professional license for one year [9]. The Relay Core N100 is listed at $2,999 per unit on the pricing page, against $1,999 MSRP in the March 2025 launch release [10][9]; a 4TB storage option was added in 2026 [16].
  • Its Trust Center lists encryption at rest and in transit and claims SOC 2 adherence (vendor claim) [17]. It publishes a data processing addendum covering GDPR and CCPA [18]; its privacy policy says face features run only when the customer enables them and retention is customer-configured [19]. Redaction of faces and plates is available through a Pimloc integration [20].
  • Lists more than 50 integrations and an API [8][21].

Watch-outs

  • Safety checks such as forklift zone entry depend on prompt-based Custom Events, launched as a limited beta in September 2025 [5] and opened to in-product trials in 2026 [15], with no published accuracy method.
  • Customer outcomes are vendor-reported and mostly about investigation time, not injury reduction [12][13].
  • Full features need Rhombus cameras or a Relay device plus per-camera licenses.

Best fit: Multi-site organizations choosing a cloud security platform that also want configurable safety and environmental alerts on the same cameras, with existing cameras bridged through Relay.
