What it does
Powerfleet sells telematics for road vehicles and for industrial trucks such as forklifts, tow tractors, man-lifts and airport ground support equipment [1]. For industrial trucks, the core device is the Forklift Gateway (VAC). It controls who can start a truck using badges or a keypad, enforces multilingual electronic pre-use checklists, and connects to a frame-mounted impact sensor that Powerfleet says uses machine learning [3]. Add-ons include Speed Manager, which slows a truck after events such as impacts, pedestrian detection or failed checklists, plus a video recorder, scales and warning lights [2].
Pedestrian Proximity Detection (PPD) is a camera system with on-board AI that detects people and other industrial vehicles in a truck's path and warns the operator with lights and sound, with no tags or wearables needed [4]. Powerfleet says current versions support up to four cameras with up to five alert zones each, and that a breach of the closest zone can cut acceleration when Speed Manager is fitted [5].
Who it is for
The products suit warehouses, plants and distribution centers that run large or mixed-brand truck fleets and want operator accountability, checklist records and impact data alongside pedestrian warnings [2]. The company traces back to I.D. Systems, incorporated in 1993, and is headquartered in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey [1].
How it is deployed
A gateway is fitted to each truck; the VAC model's specification lists Wi-Fi, and Powerfleet says constant wireless connectivity is not required [3]. PPD cameras mount on the truck, connect over Wi-Fi, LTE or Bluetooth, and can run standalone [5] or pass event data (location, time, driver ID) to the gateway [4]. Data flows to Unity, Powerfleet's cloud platform, which offers REST APIs for HR, checklist, event and usage data [7].
Notable public customers and coverage
Powerfleet trades on Nasdaq as AIOT and reported $443.8 million in revenue for the year ended March 31, 2026, after buying MiX Telematics and Fleet Complete in 2024 [1]. Its filing names Walmart, Ford, Toyota and XPO Logistics among customers across all products [1]. In a Powerfleet case study, Continental Tire's Mt. Vernon, Illinois plant forecast a 33% cut in vehicle damage costs and over $100,000 in savings from removing a truck [8]. An unnamed food and beverage company reported an 85% cut in forklift damage costs [9]. These are vendor-reported figures. ABI Research profiled PowerFleet as one of five major lift truck telematics vendors in 2024 [10] and ranked it third in a 2025 commercial telematics ranking [11]. Trade press covered the PPD launch largely from the press release [6].
Things to ask in an evaluation
- How accurate is PPD at detecting people in your lighting, racking and aisle layouts, and how was that tested?
- How are false alerts handled, and can operators silence them?
- Is camera footage stored, for how long, and who can view it?
- Which security certifications cover Unity today? We found a published DPA and disclosure policy only [12][13].
- Can gateways fit every truck in your mixed fleet, and what does installation cost?
- Capterra reviews (292 seen) mostly concern road fleets, so ask for warehouse references [14].
Our take
- Strengths: One gateway covers access control, pre-use checklists and impact sensing across mixed fleets [2][3]; camera-based pedestrian detection needs no wearables and can slow trucks [5]; audited public filings disclose ownership and scale [1].
- Watch-outs: No public detection accuracy data for PPD [4][5]; outcome figures are vendor-reported, and the larger result is from an unnamed customer [8][9]; no current security certification, camera privacy controls or public pricing found for the industrial truck products [2][12][13].
- Best fit: Large warehouse or manufacturing sites with mixed forklift fleets that want access control, checklist compliance and impact data in one system, with optional camera-based pedestrian warnings.
