What it does
i-PRO makes network cameras, recorders and video management software for security and public safety, plus medical and industrial camera modules [1]. It was Panasonic's security camera business until 2019 [2]. For safety buyers, its relevance is on-camera AI and an app platform, not a dedicated safety analytics product.
i-PRO's own edge AI applications include AI-VMD, which tells people from cars, motorcycles and bicycles and supports line-cross, loitering and direction rules, plus people, vehicle and face detection, sound classification and occupancy detection [3]. In safety terms, line-cross and zone rules can flag people entering vehicle routes or machine areas. i-PRO Active Guard can search recorded people by attributes including hat or helmet [4], which helps review PPE after the fact but is not a live PPE alarm. We found no built-in hard hat or PPE alarm, fall detection or thermal fire detection from i-PRO itself; those would come from partner apps.
These are alerting and search tools. i-PRO does not claim a functional safety rating under IEC 61496 or ISO 13849 on the pages we reviewed, so the cameras are not protective devices that stop machines.
Who it is for
i-PRO fits integrators and end users who want cameras with edge AI and documented cybersecurity, including US buyers who need NDAA-compliant equipment; i-PRO says its products comply [5]. Its published customer stories are mostly US schools, colleges and local organizations, with one construction firm [6]. EHS teams would mainly meet i-PRO when a site chooses cameras that a safety analytics vendor will run on.
How it is deployed
i-PRO says its cameras use Ambarella systems-on-chip with AI acceleration, and that all X-series and S-series cameras support AI and its SDK [7]. Through the i-PRO Camera Application Platform, partners build apps that run inside the camera and sell them to users; CV52 cameras also support Docker containers managed through Azure IoT Edge [7]. Event and search data reach Genetec Security Center, Milestone XProtect and i-PRO's own Video Insight through Active Guard, whose server can share hardware with the VMS [7][4].
For worker privacy, the AI Privacy Guard app blurs or masks faces or whole bodies on the camera, and can send a separate unmasked stream for authorized viewers [8].
Notable public customers and coverage
i-PRO Co., Ltd. was established in 2019, is headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, and reports about 1,600 employees including related companies as of May 2026; Masato Nakao is CEO [1]. Its history page says the business started as Panasonic i-PRO Sensing Solutions with co-investment from Polaris Capital Group and took its current name in 2022 [2]. Polaris lists i-PRO as a carve-out investment from November 2019 with no exit date shown [9]. Ownership percentages were not confirmed in sources we could open. Security Today reported that in March 2026 i-PRO took over wholesale and marketing in Japan from Panasonic Connect [10]. No revenue figures were found.
The McAninch Construction story is about perimeter cameras reading license plates from 337 meters; it reports no safety outcome [6].
Things to ask in an evaluation
- Which safety use cases (PPE, zone intrusion, vehicle and pedestrian conflict) run on i-PRO cameras, and which partner app provides each?
- Which camera models and firmware support those apps, and what accuracy has the partner measured in conditions like ours?
- How do alerts reach our VMS or EHS software, and is an Active Guard server needed?
- Which models include the FIPS 140-3 secure element, and how are firmware updates and SBOMs delivered?
- Can AI Privacy Guard mask workers while keeping safety detection working?
- What do cameras and partner apps cost through our integrator?
Our take
Strengths
- Detailed cybersecurity documentation: NDAA compliance, ETSI EN 303 645 certification and a FIPS 140-3 Level 3 secure element are claimed, and a PSIRT publishes advisories and SBOMs [5][11]. i-PRO says it holds ISO 27001 certification [12].
- On-camera privacy masking of faces or bodies through AI Privacy Guard [8].
- An open app platform with Docker support and integrations with Genetec, Milestone and Video Insight [7].
Watch-outs
- No built-in hard hat, PPE or fall detection; safety analytics depend on partner apps [3][7].
- Customer stories name customers but report no measured safety outcomes [6].
- No public pricing, no published data processing agreement, and no revenue figures.
Best fit: Sites that want cybersecurity-documented, NDAA-compliant edge AI cameras with privacy masking, as a base for a partner's safety analytics app.
