What it does
Guardhat was founded in Detroit in 2014 and became known for a smart hard hat. In January 2024 it announced a new name, Aatmunn, and a shift from hardware to software [2]. guardhat.com now redirects to aatmunn.com, and the current site does not mention the smart hard hat [1]. The company sells SPANR, a platform that it says collects data from "500+ device types from 50+ manufacturers" and passes it to enterprise systems [4]. Products include inspections, lone worker safety, condition monitoring, gas detection, access zoning and asset tracking [1]. The inspections product traces back to 3M's Safety Inspection Management software, which 3M agreed to transfer to Guardhat in 2023 [9]. Lone worker features include an SOS button, fall detection, missed check-in alerts and geofences [5].
Who it is for
Aatmunn targets oil and gas, utilities, chemicals, mining and construction, manufacturing, and warehousing and logistics [1]. It lists its headquarters as Livonia, Michigan [3]. Earlier hardware work was aimed at heavy industry: Caterpillar announced a Guardhat Connected Worker system with the HC1 hard hat for surface mines in 2021 [12], and Westinghouse launched a connected worker offering for nuclear plants with Guardhat in 2020 [13].
How it is deployed
Lone worker monitoring runs on an iOS and Android app with offline capability, supervisor dashboards in the cloud and third-party wearables [5]. Inspections work on phones, tablets or rugged devices, online or offline, with QR, barcode or RFID tags, and Aatmunn says most teams go live in under seven days [6]. The company lists gas detectors from Blackline, Honeywell, MSA and RKI, and integrations with Intelex, Enablon, SAP, Maximo, Workday and Power BI [4][6]. Aatmunn says it holds SOC 2 Type II (vendor claim) and publishes policies in a trust center [7]. Its data processing agreement names the entity as Guardhat, Inc. d/b/a Aatmunn, a Delaware corporation, and states that no sub-processors are used [8].
Notable public customers and coverage
Guardhat announced a Series B in January 2021 led by General Catalyst, Durable Capital Partners and Annox Capital, amount undisclosed, bringing total funding to over $40 million [10]. Verdantix covered the round [11]. Logos on the homepage include 3M, Amazon, ExxonMobil and SpaceX [1], but we found no named case study with measured results. The company claims 200+ Fortune 500 customers and over 2 million digitized inspections [2]; these are vendor claims. We found no user reviews on SourceForge [14].
Things to ask in an evaluation
- Is any Guardhat hardware, such as the HC1 hard hat, still sold and supported, and until when?
- Which wearables and gas detectors are certified to work with the platform today?
- How was fall detection validated, and what false alarm rate should you expect?
- Can you speak to a named customer running lone worker monitoring at a comparable site?
- Who controls worker location data, how long is it kept, and who can see it?
- Can you review the SOC 2 Type II report under NDA?
Our take
Strengths: A published data processing agreement and a trust center with SOC 2 Type II claimed [7][8]. A long list of named device and enterprise integrations [4][6].
Watch-outs: The original smart hard hat is no longer marketed, so confirm hardware support [1][2]. No published accuracy method for fall detection and no named case study with outcomes [5][1]. No user reviews found on review sites [14].
Best fit: Industrial sites that already own wearables or gas detectors and want one platform for inspections, lone worker alerts and device data.
