What it does

Blackline Safety makes connected safety devices and the software behind them. Its range includes the G8 and G7 wearable gas detectors, the G6 single-gas detector and EXO area monitors, all reporting to the Blackline Live cloud platform [1]. Blackline says the G8 detects up to five gases from 20+ sensor options and adds fall detection, no-motion alerts, SOS, push-to-talk and GPS [5]. Blackline offers optional 24/7 monitoring from what it calls a Five Diamond certified Safety Operations Center, claiming alert responses in under 60 seconds [13].

Who it is for

The company serves gas detection and lone worker programs in sectors such as energy, utilities, public safety and transportation, and reports more than 4,000 customers [1][2]. It was founded in 2004 and is based in Calgary [1][2]. For fiscal 2025 (ended October 31, 2025) Blackline reported revenue of C$150.5 million and customers in more than 75 countries [4].

How it is deployed

Devices connect over cellular networks, with optional satellite in some regions, and need no customer Wi-Fi [6]. Blackline Live is hosted in separate US, Europe and UAE domains, and the trust package describes anonymous device assignment, role-based access, SAML single sign-on and data retention rules [6]. Blackline says it completes an annual SOC 2 Type 2 audit and holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates [6][7]. The G7 manual lists ATEX, IECEx and CSA hazardous-area approvals and LEL performance standards (CSA C22.2 No.152, ISA 12.13.01, 60079-29-1) [8]. G8 service plans are published from US$43 per device per month [9]. PUSH and CONNECT APIs send alerts and device data to other systems [10].

Notable public customers and coverage

In June 2026 Blackline completed its sale to Francisco Partners, which valued the company at up to C$850 million; its shares were delisted from the TSX and it said it would stop public reporting [2][3]. Blackline has announced a multi-year agreement with ADNOC [4]. In a case study, Wessex Water reports more than 170 connected detectors, alerts arriving in about two seconds on average and monitoring responses under one minute; these are vendor-published figures [11]. Verdantix included Blackline among 15 solutions in its 2026 high-risk connected worker buyer's guide [12].

Things to ask in an evaluation

  • What changes to pricing, roadmap or support follow the Francisco Partners acquisition?
  • What are the accuracy and drift specifications for each sensor you plan to use?
  • How was fall detection validated, and what false alarm rate do comparable sites see?
  • Which domain will hold your data, and can you review the SOC 2 report and a DPA?
  • What do hardware, cartridges and monitoring cost beyond the service plan?
  • Can alerts and gas data flow into your EHS or permit-to-work system through the APIs?

Our take

Strengths: Detailed trust documentation: a claimed annual SOC 2 Type 2 audit, US, Europe and UAE data residency and anonymous device deployment [6][7]. Published G8 plan prices and certification standards in its manuals [8][9]. Scale and analyst coverage: C$150.5 million fiscal 2025 revenue and inclusion in a 2026 Verdantix buyer's guide [4][12].

Watch-outs: Taken private in June 2026 and no longer reporting publicly, so less financial information will be available [3]. No published per-sensor accuracy figures or fall detection validation were found, and case study outcomes are vendor-reported [8][11]. No customer DPA is published; the trust package only refers to DPAs with sub-processors [6].

Best fit: Utilities, energy, water and industrial operators that want cellular-connected gas detection and lone worker monitoring on a per-device subscription, with optional 24/7 monitoring [5][9][13].
