Public evidence checklist

What a buyer can verify about Avigilon from public sources, checked 2026-10-03. This is desk research, not a hands-on test, and it is not a rating or a ranking: a missing item may simply be shared under NDA, so ask for it. How we check

What it does

Avigilon makes security cameras, video management software (VMS), access control and AI video analytics. It is primarily a security platform, but some analytics are relevant to safety teams. Avigilon lists PPE detection among its analytics, saying it can "spot missing PPE," although it does not publish which items are detected [7]. Alta also lists unusual motion, crowd and object detection [4]. The Unity Video 8 datasheet describes Unusual Activity Detection, which flags a person or vehicle in an unusual location or moving at an unusual speed [5]. For manufacturing, Avigilon gives examples such as flagging a forklift driving the wrong way and using thermal cameras to detect overheating machinery [8]. Alta Video also offers people and vehicle occupancy counting, heatmaps and, through Alta Access, emergency mustering where users can be marked safe [9].

Who it is for

Avigilon targets security and facilities buyers across many sectors, including manufacturing, warehousing, critical infrastructure, government, education and healthcare [8][1]. For EHS teams it matters most where a site already uses Avigilon for security. Avigilon was founded in 2004 in Vancouver by Alexander Fernandes [3]. Motorola Solutions completed its acquisition on March 28, 2018, at an enterprise value of about US$1.0 billion [1].

How it is deployed

There are two separate product lines. Avigilon Unity is the on-premise suite: Avigilon cameras and NVRs or customer servers running Unity Video, with optional cloud management, and support for ONVIF-conformant third-party cameras [6][5]. Avigilon Alta, launched in March 2023 from the acquired Ava Security and Openpath products, is cloud native [2]. Avigilon says Alta can bring existing cameras onto the platform through Cloud Connectors [4]. Avigilon has said there is no planned interoperability between Unity and Alta, so the choice of line matters [14]. Unity offers privacy features including Dynamic Privacy Masking, which blurs people and vehicles and can be lifted by authorized staff; the datasheet says this was to arrive by firmware update [5].

Notable public customers and coverage

Avigilon publishes a case study on ams OSRAM's LED plant in Penang, Malaysia, which uses Unity Video, Avigilon cameras and analytics; the customer says incident response times fell by at least 50% (vendor-reported security outcome) [10]. Avigilon claims SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 with 27017, 27018 and 27701 extensions (vendor claims) and publishes a data processing agreement [11][12]. The US Department of Homeland Security lists a SAFETY Act designation for Avigilon's video surveillance system, valid to September 30, 2027; this concerns anti-terrorism liability protection, not workplace safety performance [13]. Its integrations directory shows no EHS software category [15].

Things to ask in an evaluation

  • Which PPE items does the PPE analytic detect, on which cameras, and in Alta, Unity or both?
  • What accuracy and false alert rates do you see for PPE and unusual activity detection, and how were they measured?
  • Can safety events be sent to our EHS or incident system?
  • Which existing cameras will the Cloud Connector or Unity support with full analytics?
  • Is Dynamic Privacy Masking available today on our cameras and platform?

Our take

Strengths

  • A large public company owner and published security material, including a DPA and claimed SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 [1][11][12].
  • Both on-premise (Unity) and cloud (Alta) options, with paths for third-party cameras [5][6][4].
  • Documented privacy controls in Unity, such as masking that blurs people and vehicles [5].

Watch-outs

  • Safety analytics are a small part of a security platform, and PPE detection is described only briefly with no published accuracy method [7][4].
  • Unity and Alta do not interoperate, so the platform choice locks in which features you get [14].
  • Public customer results are security outcomes reported by Avigilon, not safety outcomes [10].

Best fit: Organizations that already use or are standardizing on Avigilon for security video and want to add basic safety alerts on the same cameras.
